Announcing the 2024 Winner of the Paz Prize for Poetry Posted in: News

The National Poetry Series, in collaboration with Miami Dade College’s (MDC) acclaimed Miami Book
Fair, is pleased to announce the 2024 Paz Prize for Poetry winner: Venezuelan poet Maria Auxiliadora
Alvarez for her manuscript Un sol caído avanza. Her book was chosen by German Guerra and
will be published by Akashic Press in 2025.
María Auxiliadora Álvarez (Caracas, Venezuela, 1956) is a professor emerita at Miami University, Ohio,
since 2023. Growing up in different countries due to her father’s diplomatic career, she settled in the
United States in 1996, where she received a masters and doctorate degrees in Spanish Literature from
the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Her research areas include Mystical/Contemporary
Poetry; Pre-Columbian/Colonial Cultures; and Women, Cultural and Interdisciplinary Studies. She has
published several critical articles in literary journals, two essay books, and fourteen poetry books.
